"[A woman] should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times." —Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc

This speech, discussing manners and moral rules in Turkey, caused an uproar with Turkish women and —now— the rest of the world. Hundreds of women have posted photos of themselves laughing in protest of Arinc suggesting women not laugh in public as well as stay chaste, avoid soap operas, and not be inviting in their behavior. The hashtag direnkahkaha used with the photos (literally translating to resist and laugh off) stuck with me.
